Evidently, this is quite the slanted version of this verse, and it is quite different in other translations. (TEV isn't really a translation...) But I like this way best.

Yes, this is a horrible translation of the text. More than that, it slants the whole meaning of the passage - which is not about being strong, but about being weak.

But proves my theory: Bad theology comes from bad reading of the Bible.

Um, not to turn Beth's blog into a debate forum, but when I read the passage in the NRSV, and NIV, I don't get that the verse is about being weak. The author is giving encouragement which is always about being strong and strengthening another through one's words. The TEV version just takes the verse and states it in a more postive wording, rather than the circular rhetoric that the author writes in. Either way, the verse is about encouragement and that they will have that fellowship with the Spirit.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, bad theology comes from bad logic and not bad reading of the Bible. Because if you truly believe that "God is Love", then you have consider a good portion of the Bible to be contradictory to that. It is bad theology to hold that those portions actually portray God in a good light.
Third, you are right. Jesus is Lord, either way. To quote my bible professor, "Josh, Jesus is Lord, the Bible isn't."
